Leaders who cross the chasm from DOING to BECOMING accomplish more!
After years of working with and coaching leaders across industries and growth stages I’ve seen a recurring truth.
Doing the job of leading is necessary but not sufficient.
It might keep the lights on, but it won’t light the path.
Here are three core reasons why
Number One:
Doing is transactional.
Being is transformational.
Doing. Leadership is about task setting goals, delegating, running meetings, hitting KPIs. These are essential, but they don’t inspire followership, they manage compliance.
On the other hand, being a leader manifests in how you hold space, regulate your energy, and embody your values when no one’s watching.
People follow not just what you do, but who you are while doing it.
Transformation happens in presence, not in performance.
Number Two:
Doing is finite.
Becoming is infinite.
A to-do list ends leadership doesn’t.
Doing is a closed system. You finish the task, check the box, and move on.
Authentic leadership requires evolving with the moment.
As the world’s complexity increases, leaders must continuously improve their awareness, empathy, courage, and adaptability.
That’s not a to do, that’s a way of becoming, becoming a leader is lived commitment to growth and reflection.
It means embracing paradoxes.
Holding tensions and letting go of control that can’t be faked, and it’s never finished.
Number Three:
Doing relies on control
and being requires coherence.
Transactional leaders try to control outcomes.
They manage, they fix, but in VUCA environments,
control is an illusion.
Leaders who operate from being generate coherence across values, behaviors, and presence.
They cultivate trust, psychological safety, and alignment.
That coherence enables distributed leadership, innovation, and resilience.
It’s what makes the team lean in, not opt-out.
So doing gets tasks done being changes the system, becoming changes you.
The space between doing and being isn’t just vast.
It’s where leadership either dies or comes alive.
